SANTA BARBARA, CA – UCSB Lobby Corps plans to kick off the 2017-2018 academic year with an infosession and orientation. The event is open to all UCSB students, and marks the beginning of  the Lobby Corps membership drive. The meeting will take place in the Nati Conference Room (on the second floor of the Associated Students building) and begins at 6:30 PM on October 5. The infosession and orientation will include introductions and icebreakers, an overview of Lobby Corps, updates on activity at the Federal, State, and local levels, and, of course, lots of pizza. Incoming Co-Chairs Spencer Brandt (State and Federal) and Ashley Selki (Local) are eager to build a team of students that are hardworking, dedicated, and interested in learning more about the political process. Meetings included support for sanctuary state bill, protections for survivors, and free public transit passes SACRAMENTO, CA – UCSB Lobby Corps has begun the year before the Fall Session arrives, with the first ever Summer State Advocacy Trip. A group of 10 students traveled to Sacramento on August 29th and 30th to meet with over two dozen California Assemblymembers and Senators. The goal of the trip was to gain support for a number of bills that affect student needs and interests, before deadlines for bill passage hit in September. The group identified five bills to prioritize that cover a wide variety of topics. At the time of publishing, each of these bills is pending approval from the Assembly or Senate Appropriations Committee, the final step before a full vote of the chambers. Lobby Corps is excited to announce our first advocacy trip of the 2017-2018 academic year! We will be taking a small group of students to Sacramento to meet with our state representatives, and help pass a number of bills that directly affect our campus community. Right now, there is a very small window open for students to influence legislative outcomes this session. We are looking for passionate, civic-minded, and engaged undergraduate students to join us. Experience in lobbying, advocacy, or similar forms of civic engagement is recommended, but not required. Travel and hotel accommodations will be paid for by Associated Student UCSB Lobby Corps. Hey UCSB! Welcome to the new website of UCSB Associated Students Lobby Corps. We are beyond excited to serve as your co-chairs during the 2016-2017 academic year. We see an enormous amount of potential in our student body’s ability to shape public policy in ways that reflect the UCSB community’s unique, innovative, and forward thinking nature. Lobby Corps is a unit of UCSB Associated Students that strives to unite activism, professionalism, and strategic planning to advocate for student needs. We research, analyze, and advocate for – or against – local, state, and national legislation, programs, and policy. We harness the student voice to influence decision makers from Isla Vista to the halls of Congress.
