Historic Wins

  • In 2009, UCSA was successful in supporting the creation of the Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan, which would guarantee that students with family incomes of $60,000 or less would not pay any tuition. 
  • In 2011, UCSA played a pivotal role in securing the passage of the California DREAM Act, allowing undocumented students to access state financial aid and scholarships, building on advocacy
  • In 2018, UCSA and student advocacy for the Fund the UC campaign flooded the state capital, and were successful in securing an in-state tuition hike freeze, as well as rolling back in-state tuition by $60 per student.
  • In 2020, UCSA launched the #DoublePell campaign along with the UC Federal Government Relations, and got Congress to introduce a #DoublePell Legislation, and successfully worked with the Biden Administration to increase the maximum Pell award by $1,800, as well as expanding it to DREAMers
  • In 2021, UCSA secured $22.5 million in one-time funds for Student Academic Preparation and Educational Partnerships (SAPEP) at the UC. These programs focus on a range of outreach and retention services for underrepresented and underserved communities, particularly low-income
  • In 2022, the Fix Financial Aid Coalition, of which UCSA is an active member, secured the largest single investment in Cal Grant since the creation of the program, improving access and increasing transparency and predictability
  • In 2025, UCSA successfully mobilized to decrease the 8% proposed state budget cut to the UC to 3%. 
  • In 2025, UCSB Lobby Corps helped draft the preliminary language for SB 98, which was signed into law. SB 98 requires public K-12 schools, community colleges, and universities to notify students, faculty, and staff when immigration enforcement is confirmed on campus.
  • In 2026, UCSA students secured $20 million in emergency funding to support basic needs centers and disability student services across the 10 campuses in the 2026-27 California state budget
